Edward Bagshawe was a very creative and innovative English magician. The Magical Monthly ran from October 1923 until September 1926 (Volume 3, No. 13), more than 600 pages strong. From the foreword to the new magazine:

In presenting for your delectation the first issue of The Magical Monthly, a few words regarding our aims and policy may not be out of place.

The publication will be an absolutely independent one; our sole aim in presenting it is to offer, for professional and amateur magicians alike, an up-to-date and promptly issued magical magazine, devoted exclusively to their interests. This, our first number, quite possibly has its share of imperfections. In that case, dear reader, we would ask you to bear with us indulgently. A first number is merely a dress-rehearsal; improvements and additions will follow as a matter of course. It is believed that a new monthly journal, published at a popular price and at a time when regular "monthly magic" is not readily forthcoming, will be welcomed by the majority of magicians.

Our policy? As that has been but recently taken out, it may be relied upon not to lapse in the near future. It is to offer, as far as we are able, good magical material for all. Much original "copy" is already to hand from well-known magical contributors, and this, appearing in future issues, will no doubt be of great interest. Books and new apparatus will be reviewed thoroughly and impartially in our columns, and this section cannot fail to prove of value to our readers, considering the large number of novelties which now appear on the market every year. The latest news from the magical world will also be faithfully recorded, and new features added from time to time to keep the production up-to-date.

At all times we shall be pleased to hear from readers, and suggestions for the magazine will receive careful attention. Criticism—adverse or complimentary—is welcomed with open arms, and we shall endeavour to mould the publication to make acceptable reading for all magicians. Obviously, we cannot do this by ourselves. We need your support for that, dear reader. Perhaps you will help? …. Thank you!

Our second number is due for publication promptly on the 1st of November, and in it we hope to offer several topical novelties. A new series of articles by Mr. S. H. Sharpe will commence, under the title of "Some Ancient Magic Made Modern," and also a series of card items entitled "Puzzling Pasteboard Perplexities."

In conclusion, if you will lend us one of your ears we will whisper the usual editorial request: when you have read this number will you be good enough to show it to your friends? The sentence is hackneyed, but in this case it has the merit of sincerity. We have an almost morbid desire for a large circulation, you know.
